In a quiet village in rural Karnataka, Rekha, a 42-year-old mother of three, had been silently enduring discomfort and a lump in her breast for months. Fear, lack of awareness, and limited access to healthcare prevented her from seeking help. That’s when Sunita, a community health worker trained by HDR Healthcare Foundation, stepped in.
Sunita, empowered through HDR’s capacity-building program on Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) care, was conducting routine health screenings in the village. During a conversation with Rekha, she gently encouraged her to undergo a breast examination. With Sunita’s support, Rekha agreed to the screening, which revealed early signs of breast cancer.
Thanks to Sunita’s timely intervention and the training she received from HDR Healthcare Foundation, Rekha was referred to a nearby hospital for further diagnosis and treatment. The cancer was detected in its early stages, and with prompt medical care, Rekha is now on her path to recovery.
Today, Rekha is an advocate for early detection, sharing her story with other women in her community and urging them not to ignore warning signs. This success story highlights the critical role of community health workers and HDR Healthcare Foundation’s unwavering commitment to empowering them with the skills and knowledge needed to save lives and transform rural healthcare.
