A Shift Toward Sustainability

The Story of Kavya

In a small school in rural Karnataka, HDR Healthcare Foundation conducted a menstrual health awareness program aimed at educating adolescent girls about sustainable menstrual hygiene practices. Among the attendees was Kavya, a 15-year-old student who had struggled with limited access to affordable menstrual products, often resorting to unhygienic alternatives.

During the session, HDR experts introduced the concept of menstrual cups—explaining their affordability, environmental benefits, and long-term health advantages. Initially, Kavya and her classmates were hesitant, unfamiliar with the idea of reusable menstrual products. But through interactive demonstrations, open discussions, and answers to their questions, their apprehensions were replaced by curiosity.

Inspired by the session, Kavya decided to give the menstrual cup a try. A few months later, she shared her experience with her peers, describing how the switch had not only reduced her monthly expenses but also made her feel more confident and comfortable during her periods. Her story sparked interest among other girls, many of whom followed her lead.

Today, Kavya is a proud advocate of sustainable menstrual hygiene in her community, encouraging other girls and women to make the switch. Her journey reflects the transformative impact of education and awareness, underscoring HDR Healthcare Foundation’s commitment to empowering young women with knowledge that leads to healthier and more sustainable choices.
